YAYASAN PERMATA – A HOME FOR STREET CHILDREN IN BALI
INDONESIA – Founded in 2000 by Tina Augustina, this home for 30 street children and orphans was launched by an Indonesian woman who grew up in poverty, abuse and a dysfunctional family. From the hunger, sickness, abuse and misery that Tina arose from, she has been able to relate to street children enduring similar conditions.
After working with street kids on the island of Bali since the 1990s (getting them into school where they would be educated), her efforts evolved into an orphanage as the needs of these children for shelter, food, medical treatment and a loving family-home environment became apparent. Starting from very humble beginnings with only a few hundred dollars, Tina now has a home for 30 children from the ages of 2 to 19 years of age.
All of the children are in school, with the exception of the youngest ones, and are being taught life principles in a loving, nurturing environment. Tina's heart has always been motivated to utilize education as the vehicle to help children break out of the vicious cycle of poverty and oppression that they are confronted with.
With a handful of gifted staff and a house full of kids, the orphanage functions as a safe house for the education and development of each and every child that comes through its doors. Their challenge is to open up the world of dreams to them, and once that world is open, the sky is the limit as to what they can become and accomplish.
It costs about $1,000 a year to feed, shelter, clothe, give medical care and educate each child. As the funding increases, they plan to expand their facility and take in more street children.
